What is Botox?
Botox is one of several medications used to relax muscles. It also can slow down over-active cells. This feature is how it reduces excess sweating and part of how it relieves chronic headaches. Botox is the most popular and researched of the products of its kind.
How Does Botox Work?
Muscles move our body. In the face and neck, whether we smile, laugh, or frown, muscles can cause wrinkles. When Botox is injected into these muscles, it gradually relaxes them. These muscles stop tugging on skin, so these wrinkles can disappear.
Botox can also be used to turn the upper lip up, called a "lip flip." It can reshape eyebrows, creating a peak for a desirable look.
In the case of excess sweating in the palms and arm pits, Botox reduces sweat gland activity. Interestingly, this effect increases with repeated treatments, so the effect lasts longer each time!
How Does the Treatment Go?
All treatments begin with a consultation. The physician listens to your concerns, history with treating the area of interest, and your concerns. The physician evaluates you. He watches carefully as you move your face, such as smile, squint, and frown, to figure out how best to meet your needs. He then discusses his recommendations, and the two of you develop a plan to meet your needs.
After cleaning the skin, the physician injects small amounts of Botox into several areas. The amount of Botox and the number of injections varies from client to client. The needle used is very thin. Even so, the injections sting. Discomfort lasts typically just a second or so.
Afterward Botox you are advised to avoid pressure to the skin that was treated the rest of the day. For instance, if the forehead is treated, then do not wear a hat or headband. Avoid scrubbing the area the rest of the day also. Plan not to exercise for the next 24 hours. These precautions are meant to let Botox settle into the muscles so it can do its job.
How Long Does It Take?
The injections take several minutes. Their effect does not start right away. Some people notice some improvement in the first week. In general it takes around two weeks to see the full benefit.
